Meditation while lying down is actually very doable. In fact, many swear that it is a much more relaxing way of performing this type of meditation in this particular position. 

The reason for this is that the body is in a state of weightlessness and all muscles are relaxed when lying down.

Meditation is one of the oldest mental techniques practiced up to this day. There are many methods of meditation depending on the teacher, and they can have profoundly positive effects on the body especially when done regularly.

One of the most common images that come to mind when you talk about meditation is a person sitting in a lotus position with eyes closed. 

While this is an accurate depiction of someone meditating, there are other positions that you can use, with some of them providing benefits that the usual sitting position cannot.

Those who practice meditation regularly claim that it provides many benefits to both the body and mind. Many of these claims have been proven clinically, while others are still under study regarding their efficacy. 

For those who meditate for spiritual reasons, many have reported to having a stronger sense of connection to their intended deities if they use meditation techniques for prayer. They feel calmer and more secure even if they are not in a place of worship. Having items such as rosaries on hand can also enhance the experience.

Others, on the other hand, feel that they can focus more on work. They are also able to improve their attention span and their productivity levels have also risen due to practicing meditation regularly. It is also said that meditation helps improve the overall thought process by decluttering the mind.

There are also others who claim that meditation affects both physical and mental health. Those who have regular meditation sessions and have mental health issues have felt significant improvements in their condition. 

Feelings of panic, fear, stress, and anxiety are relieved for some who practice regular meditation techniques. They also say that it helps those who have depressive disorders. Many psychologists swear by meditation techniques as an effective tool in clearing the mind of destructive thoughts that affect mental health.

Many also say that meditation can be a way to trick your body into getting results that you want from it. In a way, meditation can be thought of as a type of self-hypnosis as many claim it to be effective in treating overeating, poor sleeping habits, smoking or alcohol addiction, and even other diseases.

It is important to note, though, that meditation can have some adverse effects and may not be for everyone. If not done correctly, meditation and the open-mindedness that it leads to may make you even more aware of negative thoughts such as anxiety and fears and may do the reverse of its intended purpose.

There are also others who meditate with the assistance of drugs that aim to alter the mind. This can lead to hallucinations or deconstructive thoughts, which is why many experts recommend that this practice should be avoided as well.

Can You Meditate While Lying Down?

Meditating while lying down is recommended for those with musculoskeletal problems such as a slipped disc. 

It is also recommended for those who want to practice meditation before they go to sleep as meditation would be a good thing to do to fully relax the body before going to bed for the night.

Lying down during meditation, however, is not recommended during times of work or when you are not in an optimal position or situation to actually lie down. It is also not recommended if you cannot find a relaxing spot to lie down.

What is the Best Way to Meditate While Lying Down?

You can begin the process of meditation by lying on your back. A large bed or a flat surface is ideal, with no other objects touching other parts of your body. You can use a pillow to cushion your neck or the back of your knees if that makes you feel comfortable.

Your feet must be shoulder-width apart and your arms either on your sides or spread out. You can close your eyes or keep them open without staring at anything in particular. The latter option is better as it minimizes your chances of falling asleep.

Use whatever smells or sounds that you would want and you can begin the meditation process in the manner that you want.

What Other Positions Can I Use for Meditation?

Aside from lying down, you can also meditate by being in a kneeling position, by sitting on a chair or on the floor, or by simply standing at attention. 

Simply put, any position that allows you to relax and be alone with your thoughts is a possible position to meditate.

While others say that meditating while walking is also possible, this is not recommended as the process will not be as effective and you might put yourself in dangerous situations as you are not completely paying attention to your surroundings.

What is important when meditating is that you are isolated and you can think freely and without disruptions. You may also be free to use scents or music without distracting others which may in turn distract you. 

Most importantly, you must be able to get in a state of relaxation without anyone or anything bothering you.

If you can achieve all this, then you can properly meditate wherever you may be and in whatever position you would like to do your meditation technique.
